Summer Reading 2026

All Lower, Middle, and Upper School students have required summer reading assignments.  Please see below for requirements for each division.  Should you have questions, please contact your child's division principal.

Lower School Summer Reading

Let's play Summer Reading Bingo!

Summer is the perfect time to grow your imagination, discover new adventures, and find joy in reading. Books can take you anywhere—from faraway places to exciting new worlds right from your own home.

Students are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes each day throughout the summer. For our younger readers, we encourage families to read aloud together and continue building a love of books.

Students entering K-Prep - Grade 5 are asked to complete at least one single BINGO  on the Summer Reading Bingo card.  Bingos may consist of 5 consecutive vertical, horizontal, or diagonal squares. Since we always want to challenge our students, we would like to challenge all students to try for a BLACKOUT BINGO (all squares completed).  Students who complete a full blackout of the Bingo card will receive a special prize when school begins!

Please staple any book covers or pictures to the completed Bingo sheet.  Students will be asked to turn in their Bingo sheets the first week of school.

Students that complete a full BLACKOUT BINGO and the required activities will receive a special recognition the second week of school.

Directions

  1. Download a BINGO card.
  2. Choose a book--Choose a book that is a good fit for your child's reading level and interests.  Use the recommended reading list as a guide to help select rich and engaging books for summer enjoyment.
  3. Read daily--Read for 20 minutes each day.  Audiobooks, partner reading, read-alouds, and independent reading all count toward completion.
  4. Initial squares--A parent or guardian should initial squares on the BINGO card as they are completed.
  5. Return the Card--Return the completed Summer Reading Bingo card to your child's homeroom teacher during the first week of school in August.  Please be sure your child's name is written clearly at the top of the page!

Middle School Summer Reading

As part of the summer reading program, students are required to read one or more novel(s) from the class list provided.  Students should choose a book from the list for the grade/class they are entering in August 2026. Grade level book(s) and assignment(s) should be finished by Friday of the first week of school.

Email Mrs. Ashcraft if you are unsure about class placement.

Additional writing assignments and activities for the summer reading novels will take place when we return to class in August. For now, just enjoy reading and reflecting on your grade’s key literary element. Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Ashcraft or Mrs. Innes if you have any questions regarding the summer reading program.

Upper School Summer Reading 

Welcome to summer reading – an active reading exercise that you can start anytime this summer.

Lessons and skill-building activities based on the summer reading lay the foundation for the first unit of the school year and will be further studied and analyzed in quarter one.

Purpose and Goals of Summer Reading:

  • Maintain skills and academic habits developed in the previous academic year
  • Foster the development of individual opinions on literature without outside influence
  • Provide the opportunity to carefully read and annotate without the time pressure of school
  • Ease the initial homework load
  • Establish themes that will be explored throughout the school year

Directions for Students:

Annotate inside your clear copy of the book. In the following pages, you will find questions, ideas, and thematic concepts to guide your reading and understanding of the assigned texts.

  • What are valuable annotations? Annotations are NOTES on or RESPONSES to the text, not simply highlighting or underlining. Do your own thinking; we are interested in your own thoughts about the assigned work.
  • Annotations assist in comprehension and retention. Interaction with the text requires your brain to question, ponder, and therefore, remember.
  • Your annotations will be used during a seminar in the second week of school.
  • Only the correct, physical copy of annotated text will be allowed in the seminar - no digital copies or other versions or notes.
  • Double check the front cover, the ISBN, translator, copyright date, and publisher before buying.
  • Your name must be clearly visible on the outside spine or cover of your book.
