In first grade the emphasis is placed upon the development of reading and math skills and instilling in the children a life-long love of learning. The reading curriculum is rich in phonics, literature, and writing while math concepts and problem solving are taught through the use of Cuisenaire Rods and other math manipulatives. Children are introduced to the Scientific Method using an inquiry approach with many hands-on activities. Patriotism and values are taught in social studies and faith is integrated through the curricula. In addition Spanish, handwriting, art, music, physical education, and computer are also part of the curricula. The maximum class size is twenty-two and the teacher is assisted by a teacher’s aide. The students wear uniforms and attend from 8:30 to 3:30 each day. |
