Curt's Corner - Lower School Chaplain

OPEN MY EYES—I SURRENDER

Last week in my Chapel message to the K-5 students, I challenged them to open their eyes so they could see clearly.  One of my examples was the Emmaus disciples who walked with Jesus but did not see Him—did not know it was Jesus.  Too often we, who have come to know our Lord and Savior and have developed a meaningful relationship with Him, find ourselves walking, completely unaware that it is Jesus who’s walking beside us.  We are very comfortable selecting our own route, deciding when to leave and making sure we have provided amply for all our personal needs.  We are in charge and we feel great when suddenly we realize that someone is walking beside us and is asking us to modify our plans—to surrender to His leadership.

But I don’t want to surrender to anyone.  To me surrender means giving up, an excuse for laziness, putting your brain in neutral and giving up rational thinking. But then the Holy Spirit opens my eyes and directs me to see what it really means to surrender.  He shows me Abram who is asked to leave his home and family to go to a place that only God knows.  There are the disciples faced with the feeding of a crowd of over 5000 with a few fish and loaves and the servants at a wedding feast who are told to do anything Jesus tells them to do and suddenly we have six large jars of wine.  We can’t forget the professional fishermen who having fished in the best way and at the best time with absolutely no success are told to cast their nets at a most inopportune time only to haul in a record catch.  A cripple picks up his bed and walks.  Surrender must mean I can trust God’s purpose without understanding the circumstances.  I can depend less on me and trust Him more.  Open my eyes, Lord.  With God all things are possible.

Please join me as we commit the following students and their families to our Almighty God in prayer:

May 10---Cole S., Daniel S., Sladen T. and Catherine W.
May 11---Caroline T., Olivia W., Sydney J., Molly So.and Abigail W.
May 12---Sofie B., Annabelle D., Ashleigh F.and Hayden H.
May 13—Charlee M., Katie P., Tiffany T.and Ethan T.
May 14—Cole B. Aiden D., Reese F. and Cody Ray H.

If you have any questions about Baptism, would like to have your child baptized or have other spiritual concerns, please contact me at extension 236 or e-mail curt.riske@princeofpeace.org. Have a blessed week!!

Boys' and Girls' Varsity Track Teams Crowned Regional Champs

Both boys' and girls' varsity track teams have had an awesome season thus far.  The girls’ team has placed in the top three teams overall in every meet this season and won the Tom Landry relays at Trinity Christian Academy a few weeks ago.  The boys’ team is doing very well also. Below is a listing of many of the team's accomplishments:

Both teams won the District Championship a couple weeks ago as well as the Regional Championships this past Friday.  School records have been falling all season and most athletes have achieved personal bests in their events.  Some really big achievements to note are:  Alex T., a sophomore, broke the girls’ 100m dash record (held by Princess Haley) at the district meet with a time of 12.46!! Jessica S.broke her own school record in the 100m hurdles at the POP Invitational with a time of 14.91 seconds. She also went on to break her own school records in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet even and the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet (also an unofficial state record)!!!  Junior Connor R., broke the school record in the 110 high hurdles at the district meet with, a time of 15.40 seconds and broke the school record in the 300 hurdles, also with a time of 40.96!! The boys mile relay team broke the school record at the regional meet with a time of 3:31. 48 (Senior-Ricky H., Junior- Connor R., Freshman-Chad K.and Sophomore - Sten St.-G.Senior Sam S., broke the record in the discus with a throw of 134’7”. Senior Alexander G. tied Jed A.'s 400m record with a time of 52.34. Sophomore Sten S.-G. broke the school record in the 1600m run (mile) at the regional meet with a personal best time of 4:42.50!

The girls' 4x100m relay team (Sophomore Maggie G., Sophomore Alex T. Senior Anne S., Junior Miranda M.) broke the school record with a time of 51.04 at the regional meet.

A really HUGE record was broken this past Friday at the North Regional Meet!!! The varsity girls' mile relay team not only broke the school record with a time of 4:05.80  but also unofficially broke the 3A state record that has been standing since 1996!!!  We will have to do it again at the state meet for it to be official!! I have no doubt that the girls will shatter this record.  In addition to breaking this record - doing so catapulted their mile relay ranking to number 2 in all divisions of TAPPS 1A-5A!!!!  More impressive, however, is the fact that this also moved them up to the 17th position in the ENTIRE STATE OF TEXAS INCLUDING ALL SCHOOLS PUBLIC OR PRIVATE!!!!!  That’s over 300 schools!!!!
Way to go girls' mile relay team!!!!!

Please pray for both teams as we head out to the state meet this Friday and Saturday!!

Boys' and Girls' MS TAPS Division Meet

WE WON both the girls' and boys' MS TAPS Division Meet

for the 5th year in a row (second year in a row for the girls!! )

We came in 3rd and 4th respectively for the girls' and boys' IAA Division teams.  (Primarily 5th & 6th grade athletes!)
(This is the first time we seeded mostly 5th & 6th grade athletes in this division…we were the ONLY school who did this and look what a great job our athletes did…AMAZING!  GOD IS SO GOOD!)

What an amazing year and what an awesome group of kids!!  Thank you teachers, administrators & parents for all for your support!

Thank you Coach Armand, Henke, Isbell, Pevehouse, Sue Jewett and Coach Woodall for making our meets and practices run so well!

In His Service

Spanish students had the opportunity to serve the community by doing just that…serving!  Threads for Hope’s annual fundraiser found 17 volunteers from Spanish classes at the high school whisking salads and entrees out to beautifully set tables filled with attendees at the organization's 10th year celebration.  Dressed in black and white and wearing dazzling smiles, the students charmed their way through their chores of serving, pouring, and cleaning.  Many thanks to Kylie B., Gabby B., Mackenzie B., Nick B., Mackenzie C., Michelle C., Valentina D., Lauren H., Chad K., Tanner L., Brett M., Taylor N., Nicole R., Nicole S., Sam S., Keisha S., and Ben W. for taking a Saturday night to support this charity work in Peru.

Mr. Dallas Lusk celebrates with son, Noah

Last Saturday, POPCS High School teacher, and Varsity Girls' Soccer Coach, Mr. Dallas Lusk, received his Master's Degree in Education Administration with Principal's Certification from Concordia University. Dallas did an internship this last semester while being mentored by Principal Swanson as well as Dr. Lucy Lambert-Guesnard, principal of Arbor Creek Elementary. He shares that he has a newfound respect for the complexity of the principal position. "Getting to shadow both a High School and an Elementary school principal as well as seeing both the private and public school settings really broadened my internship experience."

Congratulations to Dallas, Sarah, Noah and Sophia Lusk!
