POPCS Students Attend Jazzfest

Saturday March 27, selected members of our Prince of Peace middle school and high school bands participated in the 18th annual Collin College Jazz Festival, hosted by Collin County Community College, under the direction of Jazz Studies director Mr. Kris Berg. Our students performed two numbers, Deacon Jack's Gospel Shack and Oink Joint Rumble. Adjudicators Tom Berchall (Guitar) and Jason Levi (Trumpet) complimented the band on their sound, combination of instruments and choosing to improvise their solos. They also suggested that very quick improvements could be gained by regularly listening to jazz standards to develop a proper concept of style and sound. They also suggested to continue to work at varying the amount of dynamic contrast. Director David Lang had these comments, "Going into the performance I did not wish our students 'good luck' because luck is for the ill prepared. I did ask God to bless all of their efforts, however. God, of course was faithful and our students delivered a performance that was consistent with their classroom and personal practice efforts. They did not let nerves get the best of them and did a really great job on both pieces. I was also proud of the way our students conducted themselves in this public venue; calmly and professionally."

Please Help if You Can

As many of you may be aware, we are praying for Todd Fred, dad of Sophomore student Sydney and Senior student, Spencer; he was recently diagnosed with MDS, a precursor to Acute Leukemia. He is in need of a bone marrow transplant. He has begun high dose chemotherapy but unfortunately his family members were not a match. It is imperative that a match be found as soon as possible. As part of the POPCS family we want to help! It is so easy!

On Wednesday, April 7, from 3-6 pm in the High school Commons, we will have a representative from Baylor's BE THE MATCH! Program. It involves a cheek swab, a health questionnaire and consent which will only take 5-10 minutes! If you enter the registry you can save a life!

Please consider dropping by. At a time when we remember Christ's gift of his blood for us, let's consider it a blessing to be able to give back to our brother in need.  Contact Donna Hofstra at 214-549-1571 for more information.

Click here to read more about Todd Fred's story, and how you can help.

New Family Tip of the Week - Research Skills for the 21st Century

I'm trying to help my high school student fine tune their research abilities. What resources might be available at the high school library?

Research Skills in the 21st Century or Why can’t I just Google?

Preparing students for College includes gathering information for projects, papers, and reports. Students need reliable, scholarly information to complete these assignments. Google or other search engines don’t provide the appropriate scholarly information. Therefore, the POPCS Library provides our students with information they need through multiple Databases. These Databases have websites that are reviewed and filtered by educational researchers and teachers thus insuring the material is reliable and what teachers want. The Library has recently reviewed and expanded its Databases offerings.  Students may access these Databases while they are at school or from home. Access is through the POPCS Library page. Our Database Brochure is available in the High School Library.

Databases available to POPCS students include:
-Enchanted Learning: Pre-school – Elementary
-NetTrekker: Elementary, Middle School
-ProQuest Sirs, Issues Researcher: High School
-ABC-CLIO: Cluster of World Geography, History Databases for High School
-Gale: literature databases for High School, Middle School
-Global Road Warrior: nations and territories for High School and Middle School
-A To Z Maps Online: High School, Middle School

If you have a helpful tip to share with a new family, please send to the eagle.express@princeofpeace.org.

WHAT IS TRUTH?

I don’t think it’s a secret that we live in a very confused and bewildered culture.  It’s not that we no longer believe, but rather that we believe anything.  Our society rejects absolute truth and says that we accept every opinion as equally valid.

I can’t help but think back to Jesus’ trial before Pilate.  Scripture clearly proclaims that Jesus came into the world to testify to the Truth and that those who are on the side of Truth will listen to Him.  He says, “I am the TRUTH, I am the LIFE, I am the only WAY back to the Father.

You see, it comes back to our relationship with God.  Even though God created man in perfect unity with Himself, man chose to consider and accept another “truth”—I can be equal and/or superior to God Himself.  A perfect unity was broken only to be restored by the perfect life and death of God’s Son.

Do you hear those words today?  WHAT IS TRUTH?  And as you hear those words, how will you respond?

Will you, like Pilate, basically ignore the question and join the culture in which we live—“I know who I am—I am very capable and blessed and if I do the right things and do them well, I can and will be successful while also determining my future destiny in glory.”
Or
Are you ready to accept the TRUTH?—“Through the power of God’s Holy Spirit, I know who I am.  I was born in sin and separated from my God, but the Holy Spirit blessed me with the gift of Faith and the assurance that Jesus lived, died and rose again so I too can have a New Life. I am gifted and Christ lives in me and His Holy Spirit empowers me to live a life full of Love and Service and that’s the TRUTH”.

Have a Blessed Truth-filled Easter!!  Please join me as we lift up the following students and their families in our daily prayers:

April 6---Devin H., Collin L., Austin P. and Jackson S.
April 7---Reese T., Brody B., Nelson B. and Katharine C.
April 8---Andrew F., Joshua G., Sara G.and Jackson H.
April 9---Annabel L., Ryan A. and Kyle B.

If you have any questions about Baptism, would like to have your child baptized or have other spiritual concerns, please contact me at extension 236 or e-mail curt.riske@princeofpeace.org. Have a blessed week!!

"Alumni in the News"
Jennifer R.
Class of 2009

Jennifer is a freshman at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi.   She is majoring in modern languages and nursing.  On March 22nd she was inducted into the Alpha Mu Gamma Society which is the foreign language honor society.  She is majoring in Japanese and German languages for her modern language degree.  She has a 4.0 grade point average.  She attended POP from K-12th grade.  POP prepared her well for college, as her teachers at POP taught her not only a love for learning, but they also instilled in her that she could do anything she desired to do.  Academically she was more than ready for college because of her time here at POP.  Her college English teacher asked where she went to high school as she was well ahead of the rest of her class.  She would like to thank all the teachers from Mrs. Meyer her kindergarten teacher, to all of her high school teachers.

Home Run

Tanner L. hits first POPCS Homerun of the Season

Tanner L., a freshman on the Varsity Baseball team, hit the first home run of the 2009-2010 season in a district game at Legacy Christian Academy on March 23.  Tanner hit the ball hard down the 3rd base line—a distance of approximately 285 feet.  Two other players were on base making it a 3-run homer.   One of Legacy’s players presented the ball to Tanner at the conclusion of the game.  Varsity Baseball will play their next home game on Tuesday, April 6, at 4:30 p.m. at McInnish Park against CCA.  Make plans to support the Eagles in this “must win” district contest!

7th and 8th Grade Track Teams

The 7th & 8th grade athletes did an outstanding job of competing at St. Mark's this past Friday.  At one time POP girls were in third place (there were 22 teams competing). We are so proud of the athletic performances and the overall demeanor of our athletes.  Please be sure and praise our 7th & 8th grade team members.  Well Done! The web site for team results for the St. Mark's meet is www.precision-timing.com .  Look for the Bradley V Urshel meet @ St. Mark's.  You can see the results for the entire meet.

High School Track Teams

We are so proud of both teams!  They did a fantastic job Saturday at the BVU!  The girls' team placed 3rd overall!  Only Ursuline and Hockaday beat us and those are two BIG powerhouse schools.  However, if you stayed around for the mile relay, our girls WON, beating the same two schools plus more.  The boys' team had some great highlights as well.  Royce L. and Ricky H.placed 1st and 3rd in the pole vault, Sten S.- G.won the 3200m and we had a freshman highlight too.  Elliot F. placed third in the high jump in a field of upper classmen!  We also had several PR's (personal best).

Golf Teams

Congratulations to the boys' and girls' golf teams on their excellent showing at yesterday’s District Golf Tournament.  Just when it looked like this would be a rebuilding year the teams pulled off a big surprise.  The boys team finished third and now advances to the Regional Tournament. on April 12.  The four team members are: Marcus H., Gus N., Grant C.and Peter R..  Marcus and Gus were both, in the top ten medalist with Marcus shooting a stellar 88, followed by Gus’ strong 98.  Not to be outdone, the girls team battle their way to the District Championship and will also advance to the Regional Tournament.  Sarah M. was the top medialist in the girls' division and individual District Champion firing her first ever under 100 score with a 99.  Holly B. and Gabby B. also finished in the top ten. Shelby M. was one stroke out of the top ten shooting a score of 117. Way to go!

A note from a Swim Parent, about being a new member of the POPCS Swim Team:

"For several years I watched my son swim on a summer neighborhood team and looked forward to the day he could swim on the school team.  Finally, the day arrived and we were both so excited!  The experience was all we could hope for.  For me, it was gratifying to see the middle school kids so well received by the ‘veteran’ swimmers!   For my son, it was exciting and an honor to practice with the more advanced swimmers from time to time.  The encouragement and direction they received really boosted their self confidence and made for a fantastic swimming experience.  Swimming should be a year-round sport!  Can’t wait ‘til next year, Coach!"

Our prayer for our school and students this week is that as we prepare ourselves for Easter we will understand the cleansing and new start that Easter provides for us.

Titus 3:4-7 – “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,  whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,  so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”

Please join us on Wednesday mornings at 8:30 in the prayer room at the back of the sanctuary.  For additional information, contact Melissa Parrott at melissa.parrott@gmail.com.
