POPCS Students Attend Jazz Festival

Members of the Prince of Peace middle school and high school bands will join together to participate in this year’s Collin County Community College Jazz Festival. Twenty bands from around the Metroplex will meet this Saturday to perform and receive adjudication. Director David Lang has this to say concerning the festival: “This festival is unique in that, along with the opportunity to perform, each band can receive personal clinic time from the adjudicators. It’s a real privilege to have a college level jazz professor stand up and teach your band. I learn something and so do the students”.  Students participating in the festival are: Caroline Wieters - Sax, Jaewoo Bang - clarinet, Tommy Lim - violin, Bryan Lee- bass clarinet, Austin Baker - Euphonium, John Davis - Trombone, Thomas Laubhan - Trombone, Trevor Evans - Trumpet, Christina Lang - Trumpet, Claire Wolf - Trumpet, Davis Wolf - Trumpet, Matthew Lang - Percussion, Jonathan Bobo - Percussion, Connor Brandon - Percussion,  Ian Berg – Bass, and Katie Lonquist - Piano. The festival kicks off on Friday evening with an opening concert, and ends Saturday evening with a concert as well. The concerts showcase Collin’s own big band, Latin ensemble and Jazz combo, and the TI Big band. This year’s  guest artist is Tom ‘Bones’ Malone, Trombonist for the David Letterman band. The festival is hosted and managed by Jazz Studies Director Kris Berg who tirelessly promotes Jazz education at all levels and in various venues throughout the year.

New Family Tip of the Week - High School Course Credit

Does POPCS offer any summer courses that count towards High School Course Credits?

There are two "For Credit" courses offered this summer from our High School. Please see detailed course descriptions below.

Technology Applications Part 1 (1 semester credit)
June 7-18, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m
Cost: $300
Instructor: Karin Rogers, POPCS Technology Instructor
This course is available to all high school students and will count as a ½ credit for POPCS
graduation. Non-POPCS students are welcome to take the class; however the acceptance
of the ½ credit will be determined by the home school/school district of the individual student.
Credit cannot be given if a student misses more than four hours of class.
Students will learn and practice basic functionalities of Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Publisher, and Access) and will learn to organize, illustrate and deliver information in a professional
manner. Students will learn to collect, track and report information, and create standard documents
and spreadsheets. Multi-Media skills will be applied to manipulating text, graphics, and audio/
video using a variety of applications. Digital photos will be enhanced by adding music, narration,
motion, and more in projects. Students will have opportunities to record and play sounds,
import and export audio files, edit and mix tracks and apply different effects to recordings.
Projects will provide students the experience to create, edit, and share movies.
Students need to bring spiral notebook, pen/pencil and USB flash drive to class every day.

Technology Applications Part 2 Spring Semester (1 semester credit)
June 7-18, 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $300
Instructor: Elaine Barnum, POPCS Technology Instructor
This course is available to all high school students and will count as a ½ credit for POPCS
graduation. Non-POPCS students are welcome to take the class; however the acceptance of
the ½ credit will be determined by the home school/school district of the individual student.
Credit cannot be given if a student misses more than four hours of class.
Students will be trained in the basics of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop software programs.
Elements of graphic design, layout and production will be combined with special effects and the
effective use of font styles and sizes to enhance the publication. The skills taught in this class
will be used in real-life applications as students will generate publications to include producing
posters, invitations, t-shirts, brochures, magazine layouts, and developing a personal logo
design. Students’ original photography will be used in projects designed to be camera-ready
and functional for both computer/electronic and print media.
Students need to bring spiral notebook, pen/pencil and a USB flash drive to class every day.

For additional information about the two technology courses, and for registration forms, please go to the Summer In The Zone website at: http://www.popcs.org/summer/index.htm.

Curt's Corner - Lower School Chaplain

WHO WILL PRAY FOR ME?

As I reflect on the passion of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, I can’t help but be impressed with His focus and His total commitment to His personal mission—to go to the cross and there to suffer the punishment of the sins of this whole world, to be forsaken by His Heavenly Father and then die when all is finished.  And yet, as He was drawing close to His final hours, He took time to eat the Passover Meal with His disciples as He teaches them a few things about Love and Servanthood.

In addition to His teaching, He takes time to consider His relationship with His Heavenly Father, with His beloved disciples and believe it or not. He thinks also of you and me and commits our needs to His Heavenly Father in prayer.  If you haven’t done so recently, I hope you will take a few minutes to read and meditate on St. John chapter 17.  If you need a word of comfort, chapters 14-16 need to be added to your reading schedule next week.

Jesus begins by remembering and thanking God for His presence and activity in Jesus’ work here on earth, which is soon coming to completion—in fact He is so sure of the Father’s authority and acceptance that He speaks of His work, His Mission, as having been completed.  He then turns His attention to His disciples, those who have accepted and believed the Words that He shared with them.  He asks for their safety, for unity and above all for protection from the evil one.

Then He turns His focus to you and to me asking His Father to maintain our unity with our God as well as with each other.  He prays that we may truly know our purpose here on this earth and that with the blessing of His Holy Spirit; we may know and joyfully live out that mission wherever we are.

We begin our Holy Week celebration next week.  A unique experience and special opportunity is available for each of us through the Prayer Walk, available at various times Monday through Friday, March 29 through April 2 in the KidZone, Room 212.  Scheduled times are available via posters throughout our building or by checking our website.  As you accept Christ’s invitation to prayer, please include these students and their families in your special petitions:

March 29---Taylor C., Seth E.and Elijah G.
March 30---Kaley H., Alexandra K., Georgia L. and Carson M.
March 31---Grant M., Marley P.and Samuel R.
April 1---Matthew S., Chari T., Natalie W. and Connor B.
April 2---Olivia C., Mikayla C., Bryce Fa.and Brent H.

If you have any questions about Baptism, would like to have your child baptized or have other spiritual concerns, please contact me at extension 236 or e-mail curt.riske@princeofpeace.org. Have a blessed week!!

Jon Hardy and Holly Stratton

POPCS Alumni Jon H. and Holly S., who both attended POP prior to the establishment of our high school, are set to marry this June!

Jonathan graduated from UNT in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and is currently taking some undergraduate classes with the intention to apply to medical school.  He completed 2 years of medical training with the Army in May of last year.

Holly S. majored in Spanish at A&M and will graduate in May of this year.  She has worked as a scribe for an Emergency Room Doctor while finishing her degree. Like Jon her long range goal is to attend Medical school.  Holly actually had Jon's mother, Mrs. Mary Ann Hardy, in her first grade class.

The fun includes: egg hunt with thousands of eggs, bounce house, inflatable slide, obstacle course, face painters, balloon artists, crafts, midway of games, visit from the Easter bunny, music by Jeremy Blaido, and much more! Lunch will also be provided. Meet at the NEW Prince of Peace football field in the northeast corner of our campus. We want to make sure we have enough eggs filled for the kiddos and food to feed your family-please take a moment to register.
